These are the easiest matcha brownies with white chocolate. If you want to whip up an easy yet impressive sweet treat for your family or guests then you NEED to make this! This is a Japanese inspired dessert given the green tea matcha. Matcha has certainly become more mainstream and can easily be sourced in most health shops and online.
Matcha is a green tea powder that’s produced by crushing green tea leaves. It is different to green tea powder as it contains whole green tea leaves.
It has impressive health benefits primarily due to the high antioxidants in the matcha. What’s even better is that it tastes amazing in the form of brownies.
What does it taste like?
Matcha powder itself has a distinct earthy flavour. It has an umami (savoury) flavour profile and certainly an acquired taste. However, when you pair this with the sweetness of the white chocolate and sugar, it is simply divine. Sweet and savoury combined. If you like sweet and salted popcorn then you’ll love this recipe. The recipe below is not overly sweet, unlike a lot of traditional brownie recipes out there. These brownies are crunchy on the outside and gooey in the middle.
Why you should make matcha brownies
Matcha brownies are a delightful twist on the traditional chocolate brownie. The addition of matcha, a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves, not only imparts a unique, earthy flavour but also offers a range of health benefits. Matcha is rich in antioxidants, known to boost metabolism, and enhance mood and concentration. When combined with the indulgent, gooey texture of brownies, it creates a dessert that is both delicious and somewhat nutritious. So, making matcha brownies allows you to enjoy a sweet treat while also incorporating the healthful properties of matcha into your diet. It’s a win-win!
What should you serve this with?
Serve this with vanilla ice-cream if you’re feeling extra-indulgent or simply with a cup of tea.
Note, matcha contains natural caffeine. The recipe below doesn’t contain that much matcha. However, if you don’t want any children in your family consuming any caffeine then I would skip giving them these delicious brownies.
How should I store leftovers?
If you do have any leftovers – lucky you! These last up to two days after you’ve made them and anything beyond that will mean that they’ll taste stale. These should be stored in a tightly sealed container in the top part of your fridge/refrigerator. If they do taste a little hard on day 2 or 3, pop these in the microwave for 10 seconds and these will taste great again. (Warm gooey brownies are really good!)

- 90 grams White chocolate
- 75 grams Granulated sugar
- 2½ tbsp Matcha powder
- 2 small Eggs (room temperature)
- 2 tsp Vanilla extract
- ½ tsp Salt (preferably Himalayan salt)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius/gas mark 4.
- Grease an 8×8 baking pan with butter and line with baking paper and set this aside.

- Chop up the white chocolate and add half of this to the melted butter then add the matcha powder. The heat from the butter should melt the chocolate. If it doesn't return the pan to a low heat the gas/electric hob until it does. Set aside.
- In a mixing bowl, add the sugar, eggs, vanilla extract and salt then combine by hand or an electric mixer until it becomes creamy. Mix in the matcha chocolate from step 4 until it becomes a green batter.
- Sift the flour into the green batter using a sieve. Gently fold the flour into the batter using a spatula.
- Add the remaining chopped chocolate into the batter and gently fold this in until it's evenly distributed in the batter.
- Spoon this batter into the lined baking pan and bake for 20-25 mins.
- Taking this out of the oven, slam the tray on the counter to get rid of some of the trapped air then pop this back in the oven. Bake for another 10 mins.
- Take out the baking pan and remove the cooked brownie and place onto a wire rack. Let this cool down.
- Cut into 9 even squares and serve.
